Fashion comfort zones: a common trap of an ethically minded, minimalist wardrobe. A large part of ethical fashion is avoiding overconsumption - and the advice is often to find your personal style and stick to it. The downside of being too strict with this, though, is that it might be limiting and prevent you from finding new ways of express yourself through fashion.
In this episode, I will talk about:
-How I stood by skinny jeans until wide-leg did us part
-Why I am not a wardrobe minimalist
-The problem with having a "style uniform"
-How to shake things up once you decide to break out of the rut
-And of course the usual disclaimer: overconsumption is NOT the way out of a style rut

Is Silk Cruel to Animals?

Tuesday Apr 18, 2023

Tuesday Apr 18, 2023

Where does silk come from? In this episode, I discuss a topic that many fashion consumers are unaware of. The truth about silk is that it is very much an animal-derived product - and also one that has a little-known environmental impact.
In this episode, I will talk about:
-How silk is made
-Why it might be cruel - and why it is certainly not vegan
-The environmental impact of silk production
-Why "peace silk" is not the answer
-What some actually cruelty-free options are

Natural silk replacements:
Ramie - derives from a nettle plant
Cupro - made from cotton linter, a cotton by-product
Tencel - wood pulp cellulose, manufactured by Lenzing
Orange silk - made from orange peel, manufactured by Orange Fiber
Microsilk - bioengineered, manufactured by Bolt Threads

On this episode, I talk to Rebecca Cappelli, filmmaker behind Slay - a powerful documentary that explores the use of animals in the fashion industry. Truthfully depicting the fur, leather and wool industries, Slay is an insightful investigation into a taboo topic that the fashion industry has, until now, refused to touch.
We will talk about:
- Rebecca's journey as a filmmaker
-Her first film Let Us Be Heroes
-Her own  wardrobe evolution
-The impact of Slay and why it's so crucial for these stories to be told

As someone who has been shopping second hand for years, I often receive reactions from acquaintances who wonder what my "secret" is to finding so many hidden gems. The truth is...there is no secret! But there are some tips I can share to reveal why you're not having much luck, and improve your chances in the future.

In this episode, I will discuss:
-Why I only buy second-hand
-Why I hated charity shops on my first try (yes, really)
-Location, location, location!
-Seizing the day - be a carpe diem shopper (and how that's different from shopping impulsively)
-And more!

Why Don’t Vegans Wear Wool?

Wednesday Mar 15, 2023

Wednesday Mar 15, 2023

What's wrong with wool?
Before I went vegan, I actually didn't understand why vegans were going on about wool - after all, no animals were killed while making it, right? It couldn't possibly be as bad as fur or even leather. But as I learned more about how animals are used for fashion, it became clear: if you support animals' rights to live free from oppression, wool is a no-go.
In this episode, I will discuss:
-Why wool is undeniably cruel to animals
-The environmental destruction behind wool production
-What the alternatives are and what you can wear instead
Aternatives include:
Organic cotton
Tencel: https://www.tencel.com/
Faborg's Weganool: https://www.faborg.in/

How do we apply a philosophy of all-encompassing ethics to fashion? As a vegan, I started with animals - but then discovered other topics such as workers' rights, feminism, and environmental destruction.
Former model Emma Håkansson has made it her mission to spread her message of total ethics fashion - the intersection between the rights of animals, humans and the environment when it comes to the fashion industry. Her organisation Collective Fashion Justice works to promote a new fashion system which is just, solution-focused, and fair for all.
In this episode, I talk to Emma about her journey in the fashion industry, how she works to raise awareness of why we need total ethics fashion, and how mentalities are shifting when it comes to using animals for clothing. Plus, more about her book, How Veganism Can Save Us!
